Cyrille Henry

Multidisciplinary artist and developer, Cyrille Henry evolves at the crossing of art, computer science and scientific research. His work associates the use of sensors, movement analysis, physical modelling, image generating as well as real time audio-visual synthesis. He notably worked as responsible of the hardware department during four years together with La Kitchen (2001-2005) in order to create sensors' interfaces and to bring their uses along in an art context (living arts, interactive installation, contemporary music). Willing to combine his interest for music, for the image and for the developing of software, he becomes one of the founding members of the audio-visual performances project chdh in 2000. The project is regularly performed in France and Europe, and first opus is just released : vivarium, an audio and video DVD. Following this path further on, since 2003 he realises his artistic projects using particular physical modelling for the treatment and the generating of behaviours or complex forms by assembling basic elements. His works have been presented in various exhibitions in France and abroad and has contributed to both artistic and scientific publications. He also distributes the free software that he creates. Since 2006, as an independent developer, he collaborates with dance companies and other artists for the realisation of installations and interactive stage devices. Since 2002 he also takes part in giving workshops, trainings or academic lectures for various schools and research centres.

It is design to offer a fast and intuitive control over stages light. While offering large intensity variation behaviour, and effect or memory organisation, this tool can be used for live performance, dance, theatre, cinema or artistic installation.

The goals and constraints of this software are defined from the research carried out by Annie Leuridan and Cyrille Henry during creation of different shows.

From a technical point, the current implementation is composed of a kernel in Pure Data, and a graphical user interface programmed in python.

The Jotac development is done with the support of the EnsadLab (Laboratoire de l'École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs) DRII Program.

Yet unlike the standard unit generators for synthesis and effects, there is no standard catalog of mapping methods. The Mapping Library for Pd is a fledgling library of mapping primitives with the aim of cataloging existing mapping methods. Also included are techniques for conditioning sensor data to make it usable in the context of instrument design. As part of the process of generating a catalog of fundamental building blocks for mapping, we are creating a software library of mapping methods based on both research and real world projects. The ultimate goal is to derive a set of unit generators for mapping, plotting out the most basic building blocks for creating instrument mappings. This paper presents some foundationsand recent exploration related to shaping curves and physical modeling fonctions.
